Does My Website Need to Be ADA Compliant?

For many businesses and organizations, digital accessibility is an important part of meeting their obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other accessibility requirements.

But website accessibility isn't only about avoiding potential problems.

It's good business.

It's about making sure your customers can find information, understand your content, complete forms, make purchases, and interact with your business online.

Your website should work for everyone—including visitors who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification software, voice controls, and other assistive technologies.

That's why 11 Fingers Design approaches accessibility as an ongoing part of maintaining a healthy website, rather than simply installing a widget and calling the job finished.

Make Accessibility Part of Your Website Strategy.

How 11 Fingers Design Can Help.

We can evaluate your existing website, identify accessibility issues, and help develop a practical plan for improving accessibility based on recognized standards and best practices, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Depending on your website and your needs, accessibility work may include:

  • Reviewing website structure and navigation
  • Improving keyboard accessibility
  • Identifying color and contrast problems
  • Correcting forms, labels, headings, and links
  • Improving images and alternative text
  • Testing compatibility with assistive technologies
  • Remediating accessibility problems in existing content
  • Reviewing new pages and website updates
  • Providing ongoing accessibility monitoring and support

Understanding WCAG

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are internationally recognized technical standards for making websites and digital content more accessible to people with disabilities. Developed through the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), WCAG provides specific, testable criteria for evaluating and improving website accessibility.

The current standard, WCAG 2.2, organizes accessibility requirements into three levels of conformance: A, AA and AAA. Level AA is a common accessibility target for organizations working to make their websites more inclusive and accessible.

WCAG continues to evolve along with the web. WCAG 3.0 is currently under development and is expected to eventually provide broader guidance covering web content, applications, tools, publishing and emerging web technologies. For now, WCAG 3.0 remains a working draft, while WCAG 2.2 is the latest version of the established WCAG 2 standard.

At 11 Fingers Design, we use WCAG standards and accessibility best practices to help identify barriers and make websites easier for more people to use.

Accessibility Is More Than Automated Testing

Automated accessibility tools are useful, but they can't identify every accessibility problem.

Effective accessibility testing combines automated tools with knowledgeable review and, when appropriate, testing with assistive technologies such as screen readers and keyboard-only navigation.

At 11 Fingers, you aren't simply handed a report filled with technical warnings. You have a website specialist you can call when you have questions — and a team that can help you fix the problems we find.

Be proactive about website accessibility.

A better website is one that more people can use.

Whether you're building a new website, improving an existing site, or looking for ongoing accessibility support, we can help you make accessibility a manageable part of maintaining your online presence.
